Why Camillus chimneys need the work they do

Saturated brick spalls when it freezes, mortar joints erode, the clay tile joints open, and eventually a stain appears on the ceiling beside the chimney breast — at which point the crown has been failing for years. The good news is that it is entirely arrestable: on a sound Camillus chimney, sealing or recasting the crown and adding a cap is a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars, and it stops the whole chain.
